Computer Timeline
Different types of computers: PC, mainframe, laptop, netbook, PDA(Personal Digital Assistance), desktop, smartphone and embedded.
Mainframe
Mainframes are large powerful computers
They carry out different task for different people at the same time
organizes census
an example of use is: banks- for managing thousands of customers accounts each day
Advantages: can carry out different tasks, do billions of instructions per second, process large amount of data
Disadvantage: slower than a supercomputer, £4 million to purchase
Desktop
you will find them at home and office enviroments
when set up, left in one place
an example of use: running office application e.g word processer
Advantages: inexpensive, millions of calculation per second
Disadvantages: cant carry it around
Laptops
is a portable computer which is mobile
have a integrated keyboard and a touchpad as the traditional mouse
Advantages: have a powerful battery, potable, can work wherever you go
Disadvantages: heavy, recharged regualy, smaller keyboard
Netbook
10 inches in size- smaller laptop
use a flash memory
used for applications like games
Advantages: weigh less than a laptop, smaller
Disadvantages: less Ram, slower, smaller storage capacity, flash memory, smaller keyboard
Smartphone
multifunctional devices
has GPS chips
owned by thousands of independent people
Advantages: popular, different apps to have, most apps are free, extra sensors
Disadvantage: small screen, fingerprints
PDA
functions as a
personal
information
manager
touch screen for entering data
Memory card for data storage
Like a smart phone
used to keep track of meetings, birthdays ect.
Advantages: compact, useful ,like a mini PC, easier to use when standing
Disadvantages: short battery life, smaller battery which limits things what you can do, often lost
Colossus
First digital computer
developed for British codebreakers during World War II
Advantages: as much power as several hundred modern PCs
Disadvantages: as big as a large room
